Hapag-Lloyd to Acquire ZIM for $4.2 Billion

02/19/2026

German container shipping company Hapag-Lloyd has entered into a merger agreement to acquire Israeli carrier ZIM Integrated Shipping Services, in a transaction valued at approximately $4.2 billion. Under the terms of the deal, Hapag-Lloyd will purchase ZIM for $35.00 per share in cash. This price reflects a substantial premium, offering a 58% increase over ZIM's closing share price on February 13, 2026, and a 126% premium relative to its unaffected share price from August 2025. Upon completion, the combined entity is expected to rank as the world's fifth-largest container shipping operator, according to industry data from Alphaliner. The merged company would manage a fleet of more than 400 vessels and offer enhanced network coverage across major global trade routes.  (More at: gCaptain, “Hapag-Lloyd’s $4.2 Billion ZIM Acquisition Reshapes… by Mike Schuler, 2/17/2026)

Diesel High Prices and Potential Recession

05/18/2022

As the U.S. inflation rate reaches 8.3%, a near 40 year high, experts predict that the continued high price of diesel fuel increases the potential for a U.S. recession in 2023. FreightWaves reports this week that according to economists high prices for diesel will eventually translate to higher consumer prices as these costs are passed on toconsumers by shippers and trucking companies. (See more at: FreightWaves, “The climbing price of diesel is raising the risk of a recession” by Noi Mahoney, May 17, 2022)

Hydrogen Trucks in the Future

05/13/2022

Alongside development of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), FleetOwner also explains the technology and growing market of the hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle (FCEV). While both approaches provide a zero-emission solution, the fuel-cell technology actual generates electricity directly onboard the vehicle as the fuel-cell houses and allows a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. It seems apparent that the hydrogen solution is more practical for longer distances and heavier vehicles like trucks than BEV. (Read more about U.S. companies deploying FCEVs at: FleetOwner, “The dawn of hydrogen trucks” by Tyler Fussner, 5/9/2022)

History & New Age of Moving US Domestic HHGs

POSTED 07/15/2020 - By Cliff Canon, CRP, GMS

The year 2007 marked the cessation of the Household Goods Bureau's published 400 Series tariff (400N being last in the series), which was the dominant tariff utilized in contract carriage agreements for shipping domestic household goods. The end of the 400N tariff was a catalyst for contract changes in the industry.

However, since that time, move partners have grappled with increasing operating costs and a dwindling driver pool. In this article, the impact of the tariff change on household goods contracts will be examined, as well as the current and future challenges faced by move partners. Examining the trends reveals some practical steps to be taken today.

Solar Panel Complications in a Relocation Home Sale Transaction

POSTED 06/17/2020 - By Deb Hicks

The addition of a solar (photovoltaic) panel system to a residence can cost thousands of dollars, depending on the extent and size of the solar paneling. And while some states offer significant rebates for purchasing or leasing solar panels, there is often a liability associated with the system as stated in the solar contract. As described below, care should be taken to have a full contractual review of any solar panel agreement prior to authorizing an acquisition by a corporation or relocation management company (RMC).

Recently, our Home Sale Transaction (HST™) Audit team worked through a file where there was an extensive attorney review.Upon further research, it was discovered that the attorney was reviewing documentation to ensure that the solar agreement was transferable and ...

Control of Panama Canal ports to be given up by Chinese company

02/03/2026

Panama’s Supreme Court has ruled that a long-standing port concession linked to a Chinese-affiliated company operating at the Panama Canal is unconstitutional. This paves the way for a change in control of the key waterway, something U.S. President Donald Trump has insisted needs to happen. The decision affects a subsidiary of Hong Kong–based CK Hutchison Holdings and has drawn objections from Beijing.  Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino said port operations at Cristobal and Balboa will continue without disruption during the transition, with oversight by Panama’s maritime authority. A local subsidiary of A.P. Moller–Maersk will temporarily manage the facilities until a new concession process is completed. UPS Cutting 30,000 Jobs in 2026

01/28/2026

United Parcel Service (UPS) is moving forward with a significant operational restructuring in 2026, announcing plans to reduce its workforce by up to 30,000 roles. UPS leadership said the company expects to cut roughly 25 million operational work hours as part of the transition away from Amazon-related business. The workforce reduction will focus on variable operational positions. UPS also plans to introduce a second voluntary separation program for full-time drivers. In addition to labor adjustments, UPS has already identified 24 facilities slated for closure in the first half of 2026, with more potential closures under review later in the year. Looking ahead, the company is also increasing its investment in automation, aiming to streamline operations and improve efficiency across its network.  See more at: www.cnbc.com “UPS to cut additional 30,000 jobs in Amazon unwind, turnaround plan, by Laya Neelakandan, 1/27/2026)

Deep Freeze Forecast for Most of U.S.

01/22/2026

An Arctic air mass is set to drive sharply colder temperatures across much of the United States this weekend, bringing widespread operational challenges for the trucking and logistics industry. Forecasts call for single-digit to subzero highs in the Upper Midwest, with wind chills reaching –30°F or lower.  Southern regions face unusually cold conditions as well. The extreme cold increases the risk of equipment failures and service disruptions. Diesel fuel gelling, reduced battery performance, thicker engine oil, and low-performing brakes or hydraulics may lead to higher rates of breakdowns and delays. Additional impacts include reduced tire pressure, slower loading and unloading of temperature-sensitive and liquid cargo, increased driver safety concerns, and higher fuel consumption. Collectively, these conditions are expected to strain capacity and disrupt schedules. Red Sea Container Transit via Suez Canal Set to Resume

12/11/2025

CMA CGM announces plans to resume container service via the Suez Canal for certain front and backhaul voyages between the United States (East Coast) and India/Pakistan.  This sets the stage for a larger return of container ship service in the Red Sea region in 2026.  Utilizing the Suez Canal on key trade routes can shorten overall transit times by up to two weeks compared to the longer voyage around the Cape of Good Hope. The CMA CGM Verdi will be the first vessel to complete a service loop when it sails from Karachi to New York in mid-January 2026.  Other large container shipping leaders, such as Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd are yet to announce their own timelines for routing larger vessels via the Suez.
