Chinese Warship Collides with Coast Guard Cutter

08/13/2025

Two Chinese vessels, a coast guard cutter and a guided-missile destroyer, collided Monday in the South China Sea during what officials described as a failed attempt to block Philippine vessels. The incident took place about ten nautical miles from Scarborough Shoal and is being called one of the most serious mishaps involving Chinese forces in the area. According to the Philippine Coast Guard, the clash occurred shortly after their patrol vessels responded to reports of unsafe maneuvers and harassment targeting local fishing boats near the disputed reef. The BRP Teresa Magbanua and BRP Suluan were escorting the fishing carrier MV Pamamalakaya and 35 other fishing vessels as part of the government’s “Kadiwa Operation,” a program aimed at supporting and protecting fishing communities within the country’s western exclusive economic zone.  (See more at: USNI News “Chinese Warship, Cutter Collide in South China Sea" by Aaron-Matthew Lariosa, 8/12/2025)

Diesel High Prices and Potential Recession

05/18/2022

As the U.S. inflation rate reaches 8.3%, a near 40 year high, experts predict that the continued high price of diesel fuel increases the potential for a U.S. recession in 2023. FreightWaves reports this week that according to economists high prices for diesel will eventually translate to higher consumer prices as these costs are passed on toconsumers by shippers and trucking companies. (See more at: FreightWaves, “The climbing price of diesel is raising the risk of a recession” by Noi Mahoney, May 17, 2022)

Hydrogen Trucks in the Future

05/13/2022

Alongside development of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), FleetOwner also explains the technology and growing market of the hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle (FCEV). While both approaches provide a zero-emission solution, the fuel-cell technology actual generates electricity directly onboard the vehicle as the fuel-cell houses and allows a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. It seems apparent that the hydrogen solution is more practical for longer distances and heavier vehicles like trucks than BEV. (Read more about U.S. companies deploying FCEVs at: FleetOwner, “The dawn of hydrogen trucks” by Tyler Fussner, 5/9/2022)

History & New Age of Moving US Domestic HHGs

POSTED 07/15/2020 - By Cliff Canon, CRP, GMS

The year 2007 marked the cessation of the Household Goods Bureau's published 400 Series tariff (400N being last in the series), which was the dominant tariff utilized in contract carriage agreements for shipping domestic household goods. The end of the 400N tariff was a catalyst for contract changes in the industry.

However, since that time, move partners have grappled with increasing operating costs and a dwindling driver pool. In this article, the impact of the tariff change on household goods contracts will be examined, as well as the current and future challenges faced by move partners. Examining the trends reveals some practical steps to be taken today.

Solar Panel Complications in a Relocation Home Sale Transaction

POSTED 06/17/2020 - By Deb Hicks

The addition of a solar (photovoltaic) panel system to a residence can cost thousands of dollars, depending on the extent and size of the solar paneling. And while some states offer significant rebates for purchasing or leasing solar panels, there is often a liability associated with the system as stated in the solar contract. As described below, care should be taken to have a full contractual review of any solar panel agreement prior to authorizing an acquisition by a corporation or relocation management company (RMC).

Recently, our Home Sale Transaction (HST™) Audit team worked through a file where there was an extensive attorney review.Upon further research, it was discovered that the attorney was reviewing documentation to ensure that the solar agreement was transferable and ...

Largest Ever Containership to Fly U.S. Flag

07/28/2025

French shipping company CMA CGM has officially registered one of its massive cargo ships, the CMA CGM Phoenix, under the U.S. Flag during a ceremony in Charleston, South Carolina. With a capacity of 9,300 TEU, it is now the largest container vessel to ever sail under the U.S. Flag. Previously operating under the Singapore flag, the Phoenix is a Neo-Panamax class ship measuring over 1,000 feet long and 150 feet wide.  The vessel will be staffed by American crews, with 21 sailors on board at any time, rotating through a total team of 42.  The Phoenix will also serve as a new training platform for maritime officers advancing through the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point and other (state) academies.  (See more at: gcaptain.com “CMA CGM Phoenix Becomes Largest Containership Ever to Fly U.S. Flag,” by Mike Schuler, 7/24/2025)

Port of Los Angeles Sets June Record

07/15/2025

The Port of Los Angeles reported its busiest month of June on record, with 892,340 twenty foot equivalent units (TEUs) handled.  This marks an 8% increase in container traffic compared to June of last year. According to port officials, the increase is partly driven by businesses fast-tracking holiday shipments to avoid potential tariff increases later in the year. By importing products now, companies hope to avoid higher costs if trade policies change. Most of the activity came from incoming goods, which jumped 10% to over 470,000 containers. Exports also ticked up slightly, with more than 126,000 containers shipped out — a 3% increase. (See more at: freightwaves.com “June box record for Port of Los Angeles,” by Stuart Chirls, 7/15/2025)

FedEx: The World’s Largest Cargo Airline

06/24/2025

FedEx Corp.’s journey from a small logistics carrier with a few aircraft to the world’s largest cargo airline is widely considered a landmark achievement in U.S. business and global commerce. The company’s founder and longtime leader, Fred Smith—who guided FedEx for nearly five decades—passed away June 21st at the age of 80. Smith was known among colleagues and former employees as a deeply involved leader with a sharp instinct for aircraft acquisitions. Today, FedEx operates a fleet of over 700 aircraft. Around 400 of those serve core air routes, while another 310 regional turboprops are used by smaller contractors to move shipments into major FedEx hubs. The main fleet includes Boeing 757s, AirbusA300-600s, Boeing 767s, and larger wide-body MD-11 and Boeing 777 aircraft. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), FedEx handles more cargo than any other airline worldwide.

California Ports Experience Sharp Decline, Summer Surge Expected

06/18/2025

Cargo volumes at the Port of Long Beach dropped by 8.2% in May, with the port handling 639,160 TEUs as tariffs impact global trade. The nearby Port of Los Angeles also saw a year-over-year dip, moving only 716,619 TEUs—a 5% decline. At Long Beach, imported goods were down 13.4% to 299,116 TEUs, and exports slid 18.6% to 82,149 TEUs. The only category to rise was empty containers, which increased 3.2% to 257,895 TEUs. The Port of Los Angeles reported similar trends, with loaded imports down 9% and exports off by 5%. Executive Director Gene Seroka said May marked the port’s slowest month for cargo movement in over two years. However, a short-term tariff rollback is expected to drive a rebound in trade. After a 145% U.S. tariff on Chinese goods halted many orders in April, activity resumed when the rate dropped to 30% with a 90-day pause lasting through August 12. (See more at: gcaptain.com “U.S. West Coast Ports See Sharp Decline Amid Tariff Impacts…” by Mike Schuler, 6/17/2025)
