MSC Vessel Struck by Iran

06/02/2026

The MSC commercial containership Sariska V was struck twice in the port of Um-Qasr, Iraq on June 1st. The Geneva-based shipping company confirmed that the first projectile hit the vessel as it was being piloted out of port with a second strike hitting the crew area shortly after. MSC stated that crew members were unharmed and responded professionally to the unprovoked attack. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the attack. Diesel High Prices and Potential Recession

05/18/2022

As the U.S. inflation rate reaches 8.3%, a near 40 year high, experts predict that the continued high price of diesel fuel increases the potential for a U.S. recession in 2023. FreightWaves reports this week that according to economists high prices for diesel will eventually translate to higher consumer prices as these costs are passed on toconsumers by shippers and trucking companies. (See more at: FreightWaves, “The climbing price of diesel is raising the risk of a recession” by Noi Mahoney, May 17, 2022)

Hydrogen Trucks in the Future

05/13/2022

Alongside development of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), FleetOwner also explains the technology and growing market of the hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle (FCEV). While both approaches provide a zero-emission solution, the fuel-cell technology actual generates electricity directly onboard the vehicle as the fuel-cell houses and allows a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. It seems apparent that the hydrogen solution is more practical for longer distances and heavier vehicles like trucks than BEV. (Read more about U.S. companies deploying FCEVs at: FleetOwner, “The dawn of hydrogen trucks” by Tyler Fussner, 5/9/2022)

History & New Age of Moving US Domestic HHGs

POSTED 07/15/2020 - By Cliff Canon, CRP, GMS

The year 2007 marked the cessation of the Household Goods Bureau's published 400 Series tariff (400N being last in the series), which was the dominant tariff utilized in contract carriage agreements for shipping domestic household goods. The end of the 400N tariff was a catalyst for contract changes in the industry.

However, since that time, move partners have grappled with increasing operating costs and a dwindling driver pool. In this article, the impact of the tariff change on household goods contracts will be examined, as well as the current and future challenges faced by move partners. Examining the trends reveals some practical steps to be taken today.

Solar Panel Complications in a Relocation Home Sale Transaction

POSTED 06/17/2020 - By Deb Hicks

The addition of a solar (photovoltaic) panel system to a residence can cost thousands of dollars, depending on the extent and size of the solar paneling. And while some states offer significant rebates for purchasing or leasing solar panels, there is often a liability associated with the system as stated in the solar contract. As described below, care should be taken to have a full contractual review of any solar panel agreement prior to authorizing an acquisition by a corporation or relocation management company (RMC).

Recently, our Home Sale Transaction (HST™) Audit team worked through a file where there was an extensive attorney review.Upon further research, it was discovered that the attorney was reviewing documentation to ensure that the solar agreement was transferable and ...

SCOTUS Ruling Impacts Truckload Spot Rates

05/26/2026

On May 14, 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a unanimous 9-0 decision in Montgomery v. Caribe Transport II, LLC. The Court determined that the Federal Aviation Administration Authorization Act (FAAAA) does not preempt state-law negligence claims against freight brokers regarding motor vehicle safety. This decision significantly alters industry liability, as brokers can no longer use the FAAAA to shield themselves from lawsuits involving the negligent selection of carriers. Truckload spot rates climbed to new record levels in the days following, surpassing the historic peaks seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ongoing near-shoring trends continue to shift freight capacity inland, tightening supply and supporting higher rates. The full effects of the SCOTUS ruling are expected to unfold gradually over the coming months and years. IMO planning evacuation of ships in Middle East

04/22/2026

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is preparing a coordinated effort to support the safe departure of merchant vessels currently stuck in the Persian Gulf and surrounding Middle East waters. The initiative stems from a request by the IMO Council, which has called for practical steps to protect seafarers and restore safe movement for commercial shipping amid ongoing regional tensions. According to the IMO, the proposed arrangement would function as a voluntary mechanism. It would fully respect the long-standing rights and freedoms of navigation under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and international law. The framework is designed for vessels covered by the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) that are currently confined in the Persian Gulf and whose operators wish to leave the area. CMA CGM utilizing multimodal land routes in Middle East

03/19/2026

In response to ongoing restrictions and security concerns in the Strait of Hormuz, global shipping leader CMA CGM has rolled out alternative, multimodal logistics solutions in the Middle East. These efforts also prioritize crew and employee safety in the region.  By leveraging a mix of sea, road, rail, and feeder services, the company is rerouting cargo through strategic ports south of the strait—including Khor Fakkan and Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, Sohar in Oman, and Jeddah on Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast. These gateways enable more secure corridors to major UAE hubs like Khalifa, Jebel Ali, and Sharjah, while extending reliable road and maritime connections to key destinations across Saudi Arabia (including Dammam), Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Iraq-effectively bypassing the strait and maintaining...See more at: freightwaves.com “CMA CGM sets newHormuz land bypass routes,” by Stuart Chirls, 3/18/2026

Maersk ships trapped in Persian Gulf

03/16/2026

Ocean container shipping disruptions continue to rise in the Middle East, as a result of the ongoing Iran crisis. The Strait of Hormuz remains impassable for commercial traffic, forcing major carriers to suspend services, reroute vessels, and implement emergency measures. Maersk CEO, Vincent Clerc, stated in interviews with CNN and the Wall Street Journal that the closure has trapped 10 Maersk container ships in the Persian Gulf. These vessels "cannot get out" and are "stuck in the Upper Gulf," grouped offshore for crew safety. Clerc noted that even with a ceasefire, resuming normal operations would take 7–10 days. Maersk has paused bookings to/from affected ports in several Gulf states. Emergency surcharges and contingency rerouting via alternate hubs are in place. (See more at: freightwaves.com “Ten Maersk ships ‘trapped’ in Persian Gulf,” by Stuart Chirls, 3/12/2026)
